UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS


 

  • Start Early, Start Right! on September 26th, October 3rd, and October 10th: Children's National Medical Center and the Family Institute will host a comprehensive nutrition program for parents of Latino children ages 0-6 years to improve parenting skills that prevent obesity and promote healthful eating habits and physical activity. The event will be from 10am – 12pm every Saturday through November 14th. Classes are free and refreshments and childcare will be provided.   • Health Action Now! Discussion on Tuesday, September 29th: AARP is hosting a discussion about lowering the cost of prescription drugs
    moderated by WAMU host Kojo Nnamdi from 9am – 11am at the AARP Brickfield Center (601 E Street NW). Come hear from District experts about local efforts to lower skyrocketing drug costs and learn where prescription affordability measures stand in health care reform.  The event is free but seating is limited.  RSVP by September 24th by calling 1-877-926-8300.  Continental breakfast is provided.


 

  • CHAMPS Training Program Introduction on Thursday, October 1st: The Community Education Group will be holding an introduction for individuals interested in participating in the CHAMPS training program, which trains high-risk community members and recently released ex-offenders to become certified as HIV outreach specialists and HIV prevention counselors. The event will be from 12 – 3pm at 3233 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. Be sure to bring a current resume with you to the meeting.   • AIDS Walk Washington on October 3rd: Benefiting and produced by Whitman-Walker Clinic, AIDS Walk Washington is a 5K fund-raising walk/run. Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit community-based health organization that provides dependable, high-quality, comprehensive and accessible health care to those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS.   • Prevention Works Volunteer Trainings on October 3rd and 17th: For those interested in becoming outreach volunteers, Prevention Works will be holding its next set of trainings; both days are required. The October 3rd session will be from 10am – 4pm and address the history of the organization, HIV 101, Harm Reduction 101, Wound Care, Universal Precautions, Safer Injection Techniques, Tools of the Trade, and Needs of the Transgender Community. The October 17th training will be from 1 – 4pm and cover Hepatitis C, Overdose Prevention and Response, Techniques for Outreach, and Policies and Forms.   • Healthy Activities Promotion Project for You (HAPPY) on Saturday, October 3rd: Aban Institute and Associates, Inc. will host wellness activities featuring free family fun, entertainment, and informative health-related activities. HAPPY encourages DC residents to engage in healthier lifestyles to improve their health and well-being.
