Comprehensive Treatment and Medication Management for Consumers with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: Tools and Resources to Impact Practice Development

Date of Training:
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Description of Learning Event:
Patients with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and psychotic disorder not otherwise specified) often have other co-morbid medical conditions and therefore are often prescribed medications to treat their co-morbid conditions, in addition to antipsychotics and other mental health medications. It is important for the clinician to understand how to treat the patient in a comprehensive manner by considering the patient's mental and physical health needs when making clinical decisions. To that end, best practice principles have been aggregated from a variety of national expert panels including the ADA, JNC-7, ATP-3, SAMHSA, and APA and will be presented and discussed in this session. A variety of educational tools and resources, including a handbook and software tool, will be discussed and demonstrated to show how the clinician may apply these resources to assist in clinical and program decision-making and medication management for patients with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder.
